VIBERG: SHELL CORDOVAN

VIBERG: SHELL CORDOVAN

Genuine shell cordovan is inarguably the Rolls-Royce of all leathers; one may consider the tannery of it art. This specific type of leather comes from a very specific, flat and muscular part of a horsehide: the butt.

The entire tanning, shaving, and polishing process of shell cordovan is extensive and typically takes up to at least six month to complete.

"Each shell is slowly steeped in gentle vegetable liquors. The shells are genuine hot stuffed then slicked onto glass frames to dry.  Each shell is hand curried and shaved by highly skilled artisans to expose the shell. Dyes are hand rubbed on for a deep aniline finish. Finally, the shells are hand glazed to achieve the rich, glossy look and feel prized by fine craftsmen."

Originated in the city of Cordoba, Spain (where the leather derives its name from) in the seventh century and was used mainly for sharpening razors in barber shops in the late 19th century, now shell cordovan is used increasingly for footwear and other leather accessories–including the beautiful genuine shell cordovan leather strap on the Six Panel Cap from Viberg.
